Hermitage Road Antiques started life as an idea between Mark Meadows and Bottom of the Harbour Antiques in 1999. Meadows, with over 20 years experience in the tourist retail duty free industry — Ten of which were spent at sea on various passenger ships, working in and managing the shops onboard — went on to manage large duty free shops in Sydney, catering to the inbound tourist market. He managed shops at Sydney Airport, a large antique and furniture restoration business in Sydney, and set up his own small antique & jewellery shop in The Rocks in Sydney.
In 2000, he purchased 20 acres of land in Pokolbin, Hunter Valley. With a good consignment of marine antiques ready to go, courteous of Bottom of the Harbour Antiques, Mark set about building the Shed. A working holiday to Jakarta, Alang in India, Gardani Beach in Pakistan, Aligaga in Turkey, purchasing various products from these ships breakers. In addition to marine antiques, vintage, restorables, collectables, general antiques, memorabilia, furniture, and industrial were brought into the mix — With the final point of difference being our workshop.
Meadows, a toolmaker by trade, with a passion for wood work, repair and restoration, spent a good 12 months in Sydney auction houses and various markets, purchasing all sorts of tools, machine tools, shop stock, and various assets that make up HRA’s Workshop.
The Shed and infrastructure were completed in 2002. Two years of serious merchandising later, and Hermitage Road Antiques opened to the public on Australia Day 2004.
